I was surprised to find such classic art work in LA.  Los Angeles seems like such a new city that I think of modern or contemporary art.  I was shocked to find classic art (pre-1900) in the Getty and to find out that John Paul Getty, the founder of the museum, didn’t like modern art.  It seems strange to me because the architecture of the Getty seems like a shrine to modern art.  The two almost seem at odds.

I most enjoyed the decorative arts section – as a lover of antiques, I enjoy seeing museum-quality works “in-person” and learning from them.

It was a lazy day, so I wore the basics.  And I wore my beloved fuchsia sweater because I love love LOVE bright colors, particularly on a sunny day.  Seems appropriate.  The necklace was a bit of an after-thought.  I discovered it among the jewelry that I just unpacked (I’m still unpacking – almost a year later!) and I was excited to wear it after not seeing it for so long.  I like that it’s got color and is a bit of a showpiece.  As I took the necklace out of its pouch, I tried desperately to remember where I bought it.  I know it’s relatively new…  I think I bought it right before we moved from Europe to Cali, but I can’t be sure.  I might have gotten it somewhere I’ve been in the last year in the U.S. – LA, New Orleans or Minneapolis.  It’s tricky because there’s no brand mark on the necklace or pouch it came in.  I asked my husband because often he can remember details that I don’t, but he had no recollection.  So it remains a mystery.

In addition to the bright colors (purples, pinks and blues – my favorites), I love that there’s a leather patch that looks handcut.  Handmade?!?

If you’re in Los Angeles, go to the Getty!  The whole experience is cool – from the trams that take you up the hill to the museum, to the yummy food in the café (skip the snack carts except for drinks), to the free general tours to the architecture…  You get the idea.
