Today’s wedding photographer interview is with San Francisco Bay Area husband and wife team Evonne & Darren Photography! Enjoy:
Evonne & Darren Photography is an expression of our personal vision. We photograph weddings and portraits with a contemporary fine art approach, using traditional film with modern developing and digital scanning technology to achieve the aesthetic you see here. We live in Northern California, which inspires us with its scenic vistas from the rugged coastline to rustic Napa Sonoma wine country, the perfect sunlit outdoor environment to be film photographers. We love the look of analog film because it can produce gorgeous pastel-like colors and grain, allowing us to create timeless photos that are elegant, soft, organic and romantic. As a real life husband and wife wedding photography duo, we not only document the beauty and special moments of your wedding day, but also provide directions in a way that encourages our couples and guests to interact authentically and candidly.

Darren: My love for photography was determined early in life. Trained in fine-art film photography, my art became my life’s work after I married Evonne, moved to Maui and assisted her at the weddings that she planned. My style was honed over many years into the distinctive look that you see today while working as an associate wedding photographer with other leaders in the field in Hawaii and California.
Evonne: My passion for wedding photography started during my career as a destination wedding planner on the island of Maui. To showcase my creative event designs on my website, and ensure that my clients had gorgeous detail photos suitable for publication, I started taking pictures of the decor at my weddings. Local wedding professionals who saw my work reached out to me, and pretty soon planners and couples were asking us to be their wedding photographers.
Darren: My favorite part of the wedding day to capture has to be the bride and groom portrait session. That’s the time when we have a little more control of the background and setting of each image.
Evonne: There are so many parts of the wedding day that I enjoy photographing, so it’s difficult to select just one part of the day. I absolutely love the portrait session between the bride and groom. Not only does it give them a quiet moment throughout the busy day, but I also love seeing how in love they are and it reminds me of my own wedding day! I also love all the wedding details that go into each wedding – from the bride’s dress, rings, shoes, stationery to the flowers, cake, table setting at the reception. I know the brides spend a lot of time coordinating all those details, so it’s important for us to capture those.
We are fortunate that we haven’t had any awkward moments that we’ve experienced while on the job yet. As a former wedding planner, I anticipate what may go wrong and make sure that everything goes smoothly on the day of.
Darren: Hmmm… that is a tough question. My favorite places to photograph are anywhere in wine country or beach resorts!
Evonne: That is a very tough question because there are so many amazing venues out there. I may be a city girl at heart, but when it comes to weddings, I love photographing at vineyards/wineries, barns, farms and beach-front private estates.
Darren: Canon 35mm film + 5D Mark III
Evonne: Contax 645 medium format film + Canon 5D Mark III
Darren: My dream location is a villa in the Tuscan vineyards.
Evonne: My dream location is a historic castle somewhere in France.
Darren: For me, it would have to be George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin in Lake Como, Italy!
Evonne: I would have loved to photograph Princess Kate and Prince William’s wedding in the UK!
No photography school will teach you how to shoot weddings. The best way to learn is to assist other wedding photographers and second shoot for them. Shoot as much as possible before taking on any paid clients.
I think we both agree that besides the aesthetic and style of photography, the personalities of the photographers are also an important aspect that the couples should consider when choosing their wedding photographers. Out of all the wedding vendors that they hire, the wedding photographers are with them pretty much the entire day so they have to be most comfortable with them.
